Whitmor/Wirenetics manufactures and delivers wire, cable and other technology used in space travel. While these products help people explore the stars, company president Michael Weiss also helps heroes right here on Earth.
For many years, Weiss has been a dedicated sponsor of the LAFD Invitational golf tournament, one of the largest annual fundraisers for the Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firemen’s Fund. He also donates sports event tickets for the silent auction held during the event.
For Weiss, the mission of the charity — to help firefighters in need and their families — strikes a chord. “I was a firefighter in the Navy, so the profession is near to my heart,” he said. “I know some of the things they go through.”
Weiss also plays in the tournament and his gregarious personality brings smiles to the other players. It’s that outgoing attitude that has helped make his company so successful.
Whitmor started strictly as a custom cable manufacturer. In the late-’60s, the Wirenetics side of the company was developed as a distribution arm for products not manufactured by Whitmor. Then in 1986, the two companies merged to form one organization to better serve the customer. Weiss and the rest of the staff enjoy helping our heroes. He said, “It pleases me and my employees knowing that whatever we donate to the fund, it goes to helping folks in a needy situation.”
Just as rockets couldn’t break free of Earth’s hold and navigate the galaxy without his company’s products, Widows & Orphans couldn’t offer assistance to the brave heroes who risk their lives without Weiss’ generosity and goodwill. To learn more about Whitmor/Wirenetics, visit wireandcable.com.
