As the largest scrap metal recycler in the southwestern United States, SA Recycling cares about the environment. The company’s two Southern California port facilities are widely recognized as environmental leaders in the industry. And demonstrating similar leadership and care when it comes to community, SA Recycling has served as a donor to the Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firemen’s Fund for more than a decade.
Director of Public Affairs David Thornburg said, “We support the [charity] because it is important to honor and assist the firefighters that render aid to the community. This aid comes without any prejudice to people in need and the gratitude we must show to these heroes is why we continue to be a part of this wonderful organization. Our support is in honor of their dedicated passion to offer assistance to the people in need.”
Among other things, SA Recycling helps support the annual LAFD Invitational golf tournament, which benefits the Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firemen’s Fund. The whole staff contributes to the effort, including people like Moises Figueroa and Elinor Lester.
And for Thornburg, the gestures of thanks go beyond annual events. He makes sure to show his appreciation for firefighters every chance he gets, even ones he meets on the street. He feels it’s important to take the opportunity to thank them for all they do. “There is a strong communal association firefighters have and as far as I am concerned they are the best human beings on the planet,” he said.
In addition to the staff’s commitment to our heroes, if the company’s longevity is any indication (the Terminal Island facility has served the southern California area since 1962), we can look forward to SA Recycling’s involvement for years to come. For more information, visit sarecycling.com.
