On Sunday, February 26th, the American Lung Association sponsored its annual stair climb fundraiser at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Rico Gross, Captain II of the Los Angeles City Fire Department, and several of his colleagues tackled this incredible event, in full, firefighter turn-out gear, as first-time participants. Just before the big day, Rico shared, “I don’t know what to expect, but I have several partners running with me and some other teammates,” he laughed. “I’m just hoping more people will join.” Even now that they made it to the top, there’s still time to support these dedicated firefighters.
Disaster Slayers: LAFD stair climb team raising money for charity

The purpose of the annual event is to raise awareness of lung disease, firefighter cancer and fundraise support for multiple charities including the American Lung Association, our Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firefighter’s Fund, and the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation.
“I’m running to inspire others to join,” Rico said. “I’m also doing it, because I want to support all three charities.” He went on to say he would like to raise more than $5,000 for each of the charities. “We’re close to $2,500 right now, but we obviously want to raise more,” Rico said. “Any and every contribution is appreciated.

With four different ways for participants to compete, Rico conquered the course slated for elite climbers, a 2,500-stair race from bottom to top. However, those participating in this annual event are encouraged to choose the level most suitable for them. “It’s about cancer awareness, but for me it’s also about being fit to run this event and even for us being fit as firefighters,” he explained. “We’re going to push each other to finish knowing this is for such a great cause,” Rico said.

Together, Team Disaster Slayer finished with pride. The team, which included several first-time LAFD participants, was cheered on by City of Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley, who also joined TV News Anchor David Ono of ABC-7 LA on the event stage to highlight the importance of clean air and lung health for everyone, including firefighters, who face an inordinate risk of lung disease, including lung cancer. We encourage you to visit lung.org to learn about lung health and future “Fight for Air” climb events and hope you join us at the next event in Los Angeles!
