There are few categories of items more popular in charity auctions than those related to travel. From all-inclusive getaway packages to local “staycations,” people love being able to take some time away from their hectic lives and support a cause they care about at the same time.
For the past several years, the Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firemen’s Fund has been proud to count Alaska Airlines as one of our valued supporters. As a major air carrier with almost 100 destinations in the United States, Canada and Mexico, Alaska Airlines is a natural sponsor for a fire department whose members have traveled across the country and around the world to assist in disasters.
We were pleased to have Alaska Airlines in attendance at the 2013 Hope for Firefighters, one of the biggest annual fundraisers for the charity. At the annual silent auction, always a popular draw for attendees, the hottest auction item was a set of two airline tickets good for anywhere Alaska Airlines flies. Valued at $2,500, these tickets held a world of vacation possibilities to bidders.
Henry Hsieh, a LAFD Firefighter/Paramedic, is a regular Hope for Firefighter auction participant. “The bidding process was fun and exciting… just sign your name and amount!” He won several items in the 2013 auction, including the coveted Alaska Airlines tickets. “It’s amazing to see all those corporations supporting firefighters and donating all those wonderful prizes. I’m definitely excited about all the items, especially the airline tickets from Alaska Air! Two roundtrip tickets with no blackout dates!”
As exciting as winning the tickets is, it’s the benefiting cause that is the most important factor to firefighters like Hsieh. “It’s very comforting knowing members of the LAFD have Widows & Orphans to support them and their families in their time of need. It’s a great organization and an invaluable resource and asset,” Hsieh said.
Alaska Airlines will be joining the 2014 Hope for Firefighters fundraising event on June 5th, as well as offering up another pair of tickets for this year’s silent auction. With almost endless vacation options at the winner’s disposal and funds being raised for firefighter families in need, it’s a win for everyone–but only if you bid. So join us on Thursday, June 5th between 11:30am and 2:30pm in front of 333. S. Hope Street in Downtown Los Angeles to try and win those tickets and, of course, enjoy the delicious lunches and desserts made by more than 25 LAFD fire stations.
