A Night to Remember
The Academy Awards is known for glitz, glamour, and unforgettable moments. But this year, the spotlight shone brightly on a group of everyday heroes – the first responders. Invited to the prestigious event, these brave individuals embarked on a journey of preparation that culminated in a standing ovation that lasted longer than anyone could have anticipated.
Fire Captain II and PIO (Public Information Officer) Erik Scott of the Los Angeles City Fire Department (LAFD) recalls the moment they received the invitation. “We received an email from a producer of the Oscars asking for LAFD involvement, along with various other L.A. area fire departments. We never expected to be on that stage telling jokes to A-list celebrities.” he said. After battling the Pacific Palisades and Eaton Fires plus the subsequent mudslides, the invitation provided a rare opportunity for firefighters to take a brief tactical pause and enjoy a night of appreciation. The Oscars featured a special segment with host Conan O’Brien, who brought humor to the stage while honoring the firefighters. This year the Academy Awards were viewed by more than 19 million people worldwide.
From Firefighting to the Red Carpet
The firefighters were treated as talent, complete with badges, assigned seats, two script pages assigned to them plus an invitation to the Governors Ball. “We started in the red carpet and several of us provided some interviews prior to going inside the Dolby Theater. Certainly, the nerves were there. And while you’re walking in, you’re seeing so many incredible celebrities,” Erik shares.
Humor and Respect: A Delicate Balance
The journey to the Oscars was filled with excitement and nerves. Prior to hitting the red carpet, they were able to rehearse the day before as this would also help with some stage fright. The three selected to deliver the jokes were also able to work with the staff of writers to make sure there was a balance of comedy and the ability to maintain a high level of professionalism. The producers were understanding and worked with the firefighters to ensure the jokes were respectful and appropriate. “They were really cool about it. They got it, and they said no problem. They determined which ones we were okay with” Erik says.
Taking the Stage: A Moment of Awe
As the big moment approached, the energy backstage was palpable. Erik spoke to the group before they stepped out “I anticipated they would applaud for us. After all, it’s an award ceremony. I suggested that we clap along so that it’s not about us individually or as a group, but we are representatives of all first responders being recognized.”
When the firefighters took the stage, they were met with an overwhelming response. “To walk out and to receive such a rapid standing ovation was beyond humbling, nothing prepares you for walking out on that massive stage and looking out across a sea of people. You normally just see their faces on your couch when you’re watching movies” he says. “At one point, you could see my head kind of lower in awe, and they just got louder”. This moment of recognition was not just for the LAFD, but for all first responders who bravely faced the wildfires. “It wasn’t about me. It wasn’t about the LAFD, it was about all first responders, with over 10,000 that came from across the nation and beyond, including Mexico and British Columbia to fight these fires.”
The Aftermath: A Night of Mutual Respect
Following the ceremony, the firefighters attended the Governors Ball, where they mingled with celebrities and shared heartfelt stories. “Many of those attendees, including celebrities, have directly experienced the impact of wildfires and other emergencies. Our conversations often included the heartfelt stories of hope from those whose homes or neighborhoods were affected. And it was a night of mutual respect” Erik says.
Conclusion: A Standing Ovation for Heroes
The standing ovation at the Oscars was a testament to the bravery and dedication of first responders. Erik reflected on the experience, saying, “For us firefighters on the stage, I think what stood out to us most was the standing ovation. It was so humbling. The applause was roaring and the length of it, that the duration was so long that it became even more impactful.” This night at the Oscars was not just about the glitz and glamour, but about honoring the real stars who keep our communities safe.
