Sometimes people give to charity because of a personal connection to the cause. Other times, they come across a charity’s mission through acquaintances. Such is the case for financial advisor Mike Waters, of Professional Advisory Services, who will be attending this year’s LAFD Invitational golf tournament for the first time to support the Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firemen’s Fund.
“Marlene Casillas [Development and Marketing Director for Widows & Orphans] and I were introduced through our connection with The Law Firm of Hart, Mieras, and Morris, Inc.,” said Mike. “Through my partnership with the law firm I realized what a great charity it is and I am proud to be a supporter.”
There were several reasons that Mike was drawn to help Widows & Orphans and sponsor the LAFD Invitational. “First, firefighters selflessly put their lives on the line for complete strangers every day. To be able to provide financial support for their families in the unfortunate circumstance of loss of life or disability is the least I can do to honor them for their selfless acts,” he stated. “And as far as being part of the LAFD Invitational golf tournament, I love to play golf and think the firefighters deserve a day out on the course.”
Many residents of Los Angeles have an innate respect for the LAFD and the service they provide to the community. “I think the firefighter community is a very tight-knit community that supports each other and their families, not only on duty but off duty as well. It seems to me to be one big family,” Mike said.
That sense of family in the workplace isn’t new to Mike; in fact, it’s an important aspect of how he works. “I treat my clients as I would my friends and family because, eventually, that is what they become,” he said.
As a financial advisor, Mike says “My goal is to put my clients’ needs first, educate individuals and families on investment opportunities, help choose appropriate investments tailored specifically for their short term as well as long term investment objectives, and be open and available to them, providing continual communication about their investment portfolio.”
We’re grateful that there are so many people out there like Mike Waters who jump at the opportunity to help real-life heroes and their families when the need arises. Sometimes it’s not about the people finding the right cause, but the cause finding the right people.
Mike says, “Because Widows & Orphans provides much needed financial support to the families of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, I am proud to support this great charity.”
