LAFD Battalion Chief Gene Bednarchik and Captain John Jacobsen, both board members for the Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firemen’s Fund, were honored to present a special plaque to longtime supporters Don and Barbara Rickles at LAFD Fire Station 71. With the crew from 71s on hand to show their appreciation for Don and Barbara’s decades of kindness, Chief Bednarchik and Captain Jacobsen also gave the legendary comedian a firefighter helmet featuring “Rickles” on the custom-made leather shield in front and his nickname “Mr. Warmth” proudly displayed on the back.
Considered one of the top entertainers in the world, Don Rickles has brought people the gift of laughter for more than 55 years in showrooms, concert halls, TV shows and movies. He is a favorite guest on talk-shows, a Vegas headliner and is beloved by millions for his quick wit, affectionate barbs and one-of-a-kind brand of humor. True to form, Don had the firefighters laughing the whole time, but did take a moment to share one of the reasons he and Barbara choose to support them. “Giving so much of your life in the kind of work you do,” Don said. “So I say to you guys, when you are in there, think twice if you have to make a move you’re not sure about…anyway, the best of luck to you!” He and his wife Barbara have been married for more than 50 years. Heroes to Our Heroes
The thoughtfulness and generosity of donors such as Don and Barbara Rickles has made a significant difference in the lives of our firefighters and their families. Typically, the people we serve are hesitant to ask for assistance and never expected to find themselves in need. We are humbled and grateful the Rickles have chosen to help us in our mission of assisting those who sacrifice so much, yet rarely ask for anything in return.

About the Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firemen’s Fund Charity
Founded more than a century ago by firefighters who “passed the boot” to help an injured or fallen comrade, the Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firemen’s Fund is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) charity managed by the Los Angeles Firemen’s Relief Association.
The fund is dedicated to helping the families of LAFD firefighters facing a serious crisis, such as being injured or killed in the line of duty. Your kind and generous contributions make a significant impact and provide much needed care for firefighter families.
