A massive fire ball erupted during a huge commercial structure fire in Downtown Los Angeles, injuring a dozen LAFD firefighters enveloped in the flames. After being rushed to the Grossman Burn Center, in serious and even critical condition, these valiant heroes began the long road to recovery. L.A.’s top leaders and the Center’s top doctors and specialists came together to thank the firefighters for their bravery and courage in the face of this life-threatening incident.
The Boyd Street Fire broke out May 16, 2020 with more than 230 Los Angeles City Fire Department firefighters responding. The LAFD reports the first companies arrived on scene within four minutes and that the businesses were not open at the time. According to the LAFD, firefighters had to force entry with power saws, immediately initiated an aggressive interior fire attack with hose lines, and a truck company was sent to the roof to perform vertical ventilation.
When the explosion occurred and the fireball engulfed firefighters on an aerial ladder, the searing heat melted helmets, burned through protective coats and hoods and blistered and charred nearby fire apparatus. The LAFD reports all of the injured firefighters were working at Fire Station 9 on Skid Row, one of the nation’s busiest.
The incident prompted an investigation and led to numerous criminal charges. Read more from the Los Angeles City Attorney: https://www.lacityattorney.org/post/feuer-files-sweeping-criminal-charges-following-dtla-blast
