Award-winning comic strip artist Mel Keefer played a big role in the LAFD Invitational charity golf tournament each year, benefitting the Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firefighter’s Fund. He played an even greater role ushering golf into the American spotlight. Watch as we pay tribute to Mel’s art, contributions to the sports world and kind and generous philanthropy to our L.A. firefighter charity.
The lead character of the comic strip Mel created was Sandy MacDivot, a fictional character who played on the PGA Tour with real-life professionals Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Gary Player. From 1955 – 1977, Mac Divot was syndicated in 200 newspapers around the world, with millions of fans, many of whom thought Sandy was a real PGA Tour player!
MacDivot was as entertaining as it was instructional. Mel’s tips and tutorials taught so many people proper golf swings, rules and skills. Mel was also an accomplished illustrator and worked with animation companies Filmation and Hanna-Barbera. In 2007 Mel was bestowed the Lifetime Achievement Inkpot Award at Comic-Con.
Mel Keefer was a beloved fixture at the LAFD Invitational charity golf tournament. It was one of his favorite events, helping a charity he and his wife supported throughout his life. Mel passed away in 2022 at 95 years old, his name and legacy will be forever linked to the LAFD Charity Golf Tournament. His wife, son Tom, and the Ben B and Joyce E Eisenberg Foundation continue to sponsor, now in his honor, making a huge impact on the lives of our hero families in need.
